A deadly and unidentified illness has swept through northwestern Congo, killing more than 50 people, many of them within hours of falling sick. The disease, dubbed the ‘crying disease’ due to excessive crying observed in infected children, has affected over 400 individuals in two villages since January 21. Symptoms include fever, chills, body aches, diarrhea, and, in some cases, neurological distress.
Health officials remain baffled by the cause, with initial concerns over Ebola ruled out. The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating possible sources, including malaria, viral hemorrhagic fever, and food or water contamination. The outbreak’s rapid spread and unknown origin have raised fears of a wider health crisis, prompting urgent global attention.
