Pune, March 16: Around 60 tourists were injured after a swarm of bees attacked them at Shivneri Fort in Maharashtra’s Pune district on Sunday, March 16. According to forest officials, the incident occurred near the Shivai temple at the fort when a group of youths allegedly hurled stones at a beehive, triggering the attack.

Forest official Pradip Chavan confirmed that all 60 visitors sustained bee stings, and 50 people required medical attention. “The injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Fortunately, all are out of danger and have been discharged,” said Chavan.

This is not the first incident of this nature at Shivneri Fort. A similar bee attack took place on February 19 during the birth anniversary celebrations of Shivaji Maharaj, in which 10 people were injured.

Shivneri Fort, located in the Junnar tehsil, is the birthplace of Maratha King Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and is situated about 90 kilometers from Pune city. The 17th-century military fort features statues of Jijabai and young Shivaji and includes a central water pond known as ‘Badami Talav.’

The fort, which was once used to guard the trading route between Desh and Kalyan, was added to the tentative list of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2021 under the category of “Serial Nomination of Maratha Military Architecture in Maharashtra.”

Local authorities are considering increased safety measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
