The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has achieved a historic milestone in space exploration with the successful germination of cowpea seeds in microgravity. Conducted as part of the CROPS experiment aboard the PSLV-C60 mission, the seeds sprouted within just four days, marking a significant step toward sustainable food solutions for astronauts on long-duration space missions.

Launched on December 30, the PSLV-C60 rocket carried the POEM-4 platform, hosting 24 experiments, including CROPS. The project, led by ISRO’s Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), monitored factors like oxygen, carbon dioxide, temperature, humidity, and soil moisture to create optimal conditions for plant growth in space.

This success demonstrates the potential for cultivating plants in extraterrestrial environments, ensuring food security for astronauts on missions to Mars and beyond. ISRO’s future initiatives aim to study long-term plant growth, bringing humanity closer to sustainable living in space.
