The much-anticipated Malayalam film Ponman, starring Basil Joseph, hit theaters on January 30, 2025, and has taken social media by storm. Directed by veteran production designer Jothish Shankar in his debut, the film is an adaptation of G. R. Indugopan’s novel Nalanchu Cheruppakar. Netizens have praised Ponman as the best adaptation of Indugopan’s work, with many calling Basil Joseph’s performance his career-best. With its emotionally gripping second half, stunning cinematography by Sanu Sir, and an engaging score by Justin, the film has resonated strongly with audiences.

Viewers have been vocal on social media, with one user describing Ponman as a “sure-shot winner” and another calling it “a gripping drama with a thin storyline but a powerful ending.” While some felt the screenplay was slightly underwhelming, the film’s last 30 minutes have been widely appreciated. The ensemble cast, featuring Sajin Gopu, Lijomol Jose, and Deepak Parambol, also delivered strong performances. Ponman opened with a 14.93% occupancy in Malayalam theaters and collected ₹6 lakh at the domestic box office, setting the stage for a strong weekend run.
