India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has introduced new guidelines to enhance the safety of petroleum product transportation by road. Following recent tragic accidents, the board has prohibited night transport of petroleum products and mandated quarterly safety checks for vehicles carrying hazardous substances. The move aims to reduce risks associated with road transport and encourage safer alternatives like pipelines and railways.
PNGRB has also instructed oil companies to implement journey management plans, ensuring safer routes, driver training on accident-prone areas, and emergency response protocols. Additionally, regulations now mandate adequate rest periods for drivers, capping work hours to prevent fatigue-related accidents. These measures aim to prioritize public safety over commercial feasibility, making road transport of petroleum products significantly safer.
