Labour Day, or International Workers' Day, observed on May 1st, is a day to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution of workers and laborers around the globe. It originated from the labor union movement, particularly the push for an 8-hour working day in the 19th century.
In India, Labour Day was first celebrated in 1923 in Chennai by the Labour Kisan Party of Hindustan. Since then, it has grown into a movement of awareness and advocacy for fair wages, safe working conditions, job security, and social welfare.
The global pandemic reminded us of how deeply we rely on our workforce – from doctors and delivery agents to farmers and factory workers. Yet, many of these heroes remain underpaid, undervalued, and overworked.
This day serves as a reminder:
To respect all professions – from CEOs to sanitation workers.
To demand and support fair treatment for every laborer.
To recognize that no job is small when it contributes to society.
Let’s not just celebrate workers on May 1st — let’s work toward a world where every worker is valued every day.
